Rodents

Rodentia

Humane trapping, exclusion sealing, and sanitation guidance to keep rodents out for good.

Overview

Mice and rats are the most common rodent pests in Pennsylvania. House mice, Norway rats, and roof rats can gnaw through walls, contaminate food, and spread diseases including hantavirus, salmonellosis, and leptospirosis. They reproduce rapidly — a single pair of mice can produce up to 60 offspring per year.

Identification

House mouse: 3–4 inches body, gray-brown fur, large ears relative to body

Norway rat: 7–10 inches body, brown-gray fur, blunt nose, thick tail

Roof rat: 6–8 inches body, dark brown/black, pointed nose, tail longer than body

Droppings are a key identifier — mouse droppings are rice-sized, rat droppings are larger

Behavior & Habitat

Rodents are mostly nocturnal and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings — mice through a dime-sized hole, rats through a quarter-sized gap. They gnaw continuously to keep their teeth trimmed and can cause electrical fires by chewing wiring. They nest in insulation, wall voids, and cluttered storage areas.

Warning Signs

  • Droppings along walls, in cabinets, and near food sources
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, and wires
  • Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls and ceilings at night
  • Greasy rub marks along baseboards and wall edges
  • Nesting materials like shredded paper, fabric, or insulation

Prevention Tips

  • Seal all exterior gaps larger than 1/4 inch with steel wool and caulk
  • Store food in glass or metal containers
  • Keep trash in sealed bins and remove daily
  • Trim vegetation and tree branches away from the structure
  • Eliminate clutter in basements, attics, and garages

Professional Treatment

Our rodent control program includes strategic trap placement, exclusion sealing of all entry points with rodent-proof materials, sanitation guidance, and follow-up monitoring. We identify how rodents entered and seal those pathways permanently.
