Mosquitoes
Culicidae
Barrier treatments and larval source reduction to protect your family from mosquito-borne illness.

Overview
Mosquitoes are disease-carrying insects that breed in standing water. They are a major summer nuisance and health risk in Pennsylvania, capable of transmitting West Nile virus, Zika, and Eastern equine encephalitis. Female mosquitoes require blood meals to produce eggs.
Identification
Slender body with long legs and a long proboscis for feeding
Wings with distinctive scales creating a buzzing sound
Adults are typically 3–6 mm long
Species range from gray-brown to black with white markings
Larvae (wigglers) live in standing water
Behavior & Habitat
Female mosquitoes seek blood meals, attracted by CO2, body heat, and certain scents. They breed in any standing water — bird baths, clogged gutters, flowerpot saucers, and tire swings. A single female can lay 100–300 eggs at a time, and eggs can hatch within 24–48 hours in warm weather.
Warning Signs
- •Persistent biting, especially at dawn and dusk

- •Increased presence near vegetation and shaded areas
Prevention Tips
- Eliminate all standing water weekly — birdbaths, gutters, pots
- Install or repair window and door screens
- Use EPA-registered repellents when outdoors
- Maintain swimming pools and water features properly
- Keep grass and vegetation trimmed short
